Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed that Russian and Ukrainian officials met last week in Abu Dhabi. He addressed the issue during a news conference in Bishkek after the CSTO summit. He said the talks took place at Kievโs initiative. He also revealed that a representative of the US administration attended the meeting. Putin noted that the participation of the US surprised Moscow.
He said Washington later informed Russia that it would send a delegation soon. He added that the makeup of that delegation remains Washingtonโs decision. He also commented on the published peace draft. He said Moscow sees the US adding some Russian positions. However, he stressed that several points still require serious discussion.
Putin Outlines Conditions for Ending Offensive
Putin stated that Russia would end its Ukraine offensive if Ukrainian troops withdrew from contested territories. He said Moscow would stop combat operations once Kiev left regions Russia claims as its own. However, he warned that Russia would take those territories by force if Ukraine refused to withdraw.
The Russian president also spoke about expected retaliatory measures. He said Russia is preparing a response to any seizure of its assets in Europe. He called potential asset confiscations an act of theft. He warned that such actions would damage the global financial system and weaken trust.
Sanctions Remain Major Point of Tension
Putin also expressed surprise at new US sanctions against Russian oil companies. He said those sanctions continue to harm relations between Moscow and Washington. Moreover, he argued that the growing wave of Western sanctions worsens diplomatic ties and fuels distrust.
He said Russia views these actions as destructive and unreasonable. He insisted that sanctions create barriers to dialogue. He added that such steps reduce chances for a negotiated settlement.
Putin ended his remarks by urging all sides to act responsibly. He said responsible diplomacy remains essential during global instability.
