The Punjab cabinet has approved the “Roshan Gharana” program, which aims to provide solar panels to consumers using up to 500 units of electricity. This initiative, approved by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz during a meeting on Monday, will see the provincial government covering 90% of the cost of the solar panels, with consumers paying the remaining 10%.
The solar panels will be available to consumers through a five-year installment plan, with lower payments during the winter months when solar generation is reduced. This decision follows the Punjab government’s recent announcement of a comprehensive plan to distribute free solar panels based on electricity consumption and to offer subsidized loans for solar installation.
Announced on July 5, the plan stipulates that consumers using up to 200 units of electricity per month will receive free solar panels, while those using between 200 and 500 units per month will be eligible for interest-free loans for solar panel installation.
The initiative is designed to address high electricity costs and the ongoing energy crisis, with a focus on prioritizing the poorest households for solar system distribution. “We will not leave the people alone in these difficult times,” said Chief Minister Maryam, expressing confidence that within five years, the current problems will be resolved.
