Army Deployment Expanded Amid Worsening Flood Crisis
The Punjab Interior Department has formally requested the deployment of Pakistan Army troops in Lodhran to assist with escalating flood relief operations, as floodwaters continue to rise across the province. This move follows the Army’s ongoing support in districts including Lahore, Kasur, Sialkot, Faisalabad, Narowal, Okara, Sargodha, and Hafizabad.
The Pakistan Army has been mobilized to work alongside civil authorities to protect human lives, ensure smooth evacuations, and facilitate emergency relief distribution. Their tasks include helping local administrations with evacuations, safeguarding vulnerable communities, and providing critical logistical support during this climate emergency.
The call for military support comes amid a worsening flood situation triggered by heavy rainfall and the release of dam water by India, which has led to rising water levels in major rivers such as the Ravi. With India reportedly opening all floodgates on the Ravi River, the threat of further inundation in Punjab has grown significantly.
A spokesperson for the Punjab Home Department confirmed that the decision to call in the military was taken as an emergency measure, especially for seven high-risk districts. The spokesperson noted that district administrations, along with Rescue 1122, Civil Defence, and Punjab Police, were already engaged in round-the-clock flood response.
Civil Defence, PDMA Lead Relief Efforts Across Affected Areas
In addition to the Army’s involvement, over 9,000 Civil Defence volunteers have been deployed in flood-hit areas. These teams are providing essential support in the safe evacuation of residents and livestock, managing relief camps, and assisting with logistics and shelter arrangements.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), in coordination with local officials, continues to monitor river levels and oversee emergency responses. Relief camps are operational across the affected districts, offering food, clean water, and temporary housing for displaced families.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with rescue teams during this critical time. People in vulnerable areas are advised to evacuate early and follow government advisories as the situation evolves.
The government has reiterated its commitment to protect lives and minimize damage, as more heavy rainfall and upstream water releases are expected in the coming days.
