LAHORE: Chief Minister of Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif revealed that the Punjab province will have the largest fleet of electric buses by December 2025. She said that at least 1100 electric buses will operate across Punjab by December 2025. Additionally, 400 more buses will be inducted next year to expand the eco-friendly transport network.
The Chief Minister directed all Deputy Commissioners to establish bus stops for electric buses within three months. She also announced the repair and construction of 25 kilometers of roads in every village. To strengthen rural infrastructure, she pledged new sewerage and drainage systems, underground water storage tanks, and clean drinking water facilities through tankers for remote communities. She stated this while inaugurating the Electric Bus Project in Pakpattan Sharif.
Focus on Equal Urban and Rural Development
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif stressed that real progress requires equal development across all 38 districts of Punjab. She proudly launched the ‘Suthra Punjab Program’, calling it the world’s largest waste management initiative worth Rs. 100 billion. Under this project, modern waste management machinery is being distributed to every district, tehsil, and village without any bias. She remarked that “daughters not only clean but also beautify homes,” symbolizing her dedication to a cleaner and greener Punjab.
Electric buses are now operational in cities previously deprived of public transport, including Mianwali, Wazirabad, Sahiwal, Sargodha, Faisalabad, D.G. Khan, and Pakpattan. The fare for the electric bus has been set at Rs. 20, while students, women, senior citizens, and differently-abled persons can travel free of cost. Each bus includes separate women’s compartments and CCTV surveillance to ensure passenger safety.
Transforming Punjab’s Infrastructure and Public Services
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif emphasized that development is now shifting from large cities to smaller towns. Major improvements are visible in sanitation, drainage, and disposal systems. She noted that WASA, once confined to Lahore, now has offices in 25 cities across Punjab.
Highlighting rapid housing development, she revealed that 90,000 houses are under construction within eight months under the “Apni Chhat Apna Ghar” program, targeting 500,000 homes in five years. She also announced financial assistance for 1.4 million workers, each receiving Rs. 3,000 monthly.
Punjab has also witnessed significant healthcare progress. The first cardiology center in Sahiwal is now operational, while Nawaz Sharif Cardiology Centers in Murree and Sargodha are functioning efficiently. The Nawaz Sharif Cancer Hospital in Lahore nears completion, and cancer treatment using advanced co-ablation machines has started at Mayo Hospital.
Commitment to Farmers and Social Welfare
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif condemned previous governments for halting free medicines in public hospitals. She affirmed the restoration of free home delivery of medicines for patients suffering from hepatitis, heart disease, tuberculosis, and diabetes.
She also announced interest-free loans and machinery for farmers along with the introduction of ‘Himat’ and Minority Cards across Punjab. She reaffirmed her government’s focus on maintaining law and order and providing equal public service throughout the province.
