LAHORE: Punjab province will observe a four-day long weekend this week as Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced a provincial holiday on February 6 to mark Basant celebrations across the province. She shared the decision on her official X account.
Maryam Nawaz said that Punjab residents would enjoy a long weekend with Kashmir Day on February 5, followed by the Basant holiday and the regular Saturday and Sunday breaks.
The chief minister expressed hope that citizens would use the extended holiday to relax, recharge, and celebrate the cultural festival responsibly.
Consequently, the announcement sparked excitement, particularly in Lahore, where preparations have intensified ahead of the festivities. On Sunday, the Punjab administration opened the sale of kites and strings in connection with Basant celebrations.
Lahore Gears Up for Three-Day Basant Festival
The Punjab government last month allowed Basant celebrations under strict conditions, formally lifting a 25-year ban on kite flying. As a result, Lahore is preparing to host the festival from February 6 to 8, with both government departments and citizens actively participating in arrangements.
Meanwhile, the Lahore administration has decorated public transport with vibrant Basant-themed artwork. Speedo buses and green electric buses now display Punjab-inspired colours and cultural imagery, adding to the festive atmosphere across the city. In addition, the provincial government has announced free travel on metro bus, Orange Line, Speedo, and electric bus services during the Basant festival to encourage public participation.
Safety Measures and Public Arrangements Finalised
Alongside celebrations, authorities have prioritised public safety. The Lahore deputy commissioner has constituted quick response teams in every tehsil to oversee monitoring, emergency response, and enforcement of safety regulations during the festival. These teams will remain active throughout the celebrations to address any untoward incidents promptly.
Moreover, officials have reiterated that Basant celebrations must follow prescribed safety guidelines to prevent accidents and maintain order. Therefore, the government aims to balance cultural revival with public safety and civic responsibility.
Overall, the holiday announcement and extensive preparations signal a renewed cultural moment in Punjab, as Basant returns under a regulated framework after decades.
