Officials Decline Comment as Aircraft Activity Raises Questions
Opposition Figures Question Timing Amid Economic Pressures
LAHORE, Feb. 17 — Punjab government officials remained silent Tuesday over reports claiming the provincial administration acquired a luxury Gulfstream aircraft for VIP transport, while criticism continued mounting across political and social circles. Earlier, an online defense and security account reported that Punjab authorities obtained a 2019-manufactured Gulfstream G500 jet, adding that the aircraft would soon receive Pakistani registration after operating under a United States registry. Moreover, the report estimated the jet’s price between $38 million and $42 million, consequently prompting public debate regarding government spending priorities during economic hardship.
Meanwhile, aviation tracking data indicated the aircraft recently operated between several airports within Punjab, fueling speculation about its intended use. However, officials contacted for confirmation avoided comment, while some declined calls seeking clarification on the matter. Additionally, one provincial official denied knowledge of any purchase before ending communication, leaving uncertainty surrounding ownership and operational responsibility of the aircraft. Nevertheless, opposition leaders criticized the reported acquisition, arguing that authorities should prioritize economic relief instead of luxury expenditures.
Former finance minister Miftah Ismail contrasted the alleged purchase with rising fuel prices, saying citizens face austerity while officials reportedly seek luxury travel options. Consequently, former Sindh governor Mohammad Zubair also questioned whether governments confronting poverty and unemployment challenges should allocate resources toward high-cost transport. Analysts noted that official clarification could help resolve confusion, yet government representatives have not issued any formal statement addressing the claims. Ultimately, observers said continuing silence risks intensifying criticism, as citizens seek transparency regarding public spending while economic pressures continue affecting households across Punjab, prompting calls for accountability and clearer communication from authorities regarding public resource allocation decisions.
