LAHORE: The Punjab government on Thursday imposed Section 144 across the province until Saturday (October 18) to maintain law and order amid prevailing security concerns.
Ban on Gatherings, Rallies, and Protests
According to a notification issued by the Punjab Home Department, all types of public gatherings, rallies, protests, and sit-ins have been banned during this period. The order also prohibits the display of weapons and the use of loudspeakers, except for the call to prayer (Azaan) and Friday sermons.
Similarly, authorities have restricted the gathering of more than four people at public places. The publication and distribution of inflammatory, sectarian, or hate material have also been strictly prohibited.
Officials stated that the decision aims to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure public safety and peace across the province.
Strict Enforcement and Legal Action
The Home Department has directed concerned authorities to strictly enforce the restrictions and take legal action against any violation of the order. Law enforcement agencies have been instructed to monitor potential flashpoints and ensure compliance with the directives.
Punjab IG Issues Strong Warning
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Punjab Dr. Usman Anwar warned that no one will be allowed to take to the streets under the pretext of strikes or take the law into their own hands. He vowed strict action to protect citizens’ lives, property, and public order.
During a high-level security meeting, the IG emphasized that police will ensure full enforcement of the law and deal with rioters and miscreants with an iron hand. Offenders involved in vandalism or violence will face prosecution under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), which carries penalties of 10 to 14 years’ imprisonment for serious offences.
AI Technology to Track Suspects
Dr. Anwar revealed that police will use artificial intelligence (AI)-based tools, including the FaceTrace app and vehicle number-plate recognition features, to track and arrest wanted suspects under Section 7 of the ATA.
To implement these measures, 27,000 police officers and personnel will be deployed across Punjab. Additionally, 12,000 Special Branch officers have been assigned to locate and apprehend potential troublemakers.
Officials said the enhanced security measures aim to preempt unrest, safeguard public life and property, and ensure complete adherence to law and order across the province.
