Stage Drama Actresses
The Punjab government has announced a lifetime ban on theatre actresses found guilty of performing obscene acts, marking a significant step toward curbing vulgarity in the entertainment sector.
This move is part of a broader initiative to promote decency in stage performances and restore the cultural integrity of the theatre industry.
Punjab Minister for Information and Culture, Azma Zahid Bukhari, recently convened a meeting with theatre owners to address ongoing challenges and concerns within the sector.
During the meeting, it was decided that strict measures would be taken against performers and establishments promoting vulgarity. The government emphasized its zero-tolerance policy toward obscenity, signaling a commitment to making theatres family-friendly spaces.
Key decisions were announced during the meeting. The government will revoke the licenses of theatres found encouraging inappropriate performances.
Additionally, the Punjab Arts Council has been directed to obtain formal commitments from theatre owners, ensuring their pledge to abstain from promoting obscenity.
Theatres previously sealed for such violations will only be reopened after submitting these undertakings, further reinforcing the administration’s stance.
Azma Zahid Bukhari underlined that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif is resolute in her efforts to prevent the proliferation of vulgar content.
She revealed that upcoming legislation is being developed to regulate stage performances, encouraging the production of socially responsible dramas that provide constructive messages to the public.
This decision comes after repeated warnings to non-compliant theatres, particularly in Lahore, where several establishments have faced closures for violating regulations.
In 2023, the Punjab caretaker government took similar actions, shutting down all theatres in the Lahore division over allegations of vulgar dances and obscene acts.
Caretaker Provincial Information Minister Amir Mir noted that these measures followed continued non-compliance despite repeated warnings.
By imposing a lifetime ban on performers involved in inappropriate acts and enforcing stricter regulations, the Punjab government aims to foster a positive theatrical environment.
These measures seek to ensure that stage performances reflect the province’s rich cultural heritage while offering meaningful entertainment to audiences across Punjab.
This bold initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to upholding cultural values and promoting socially responsible entertainment.
