LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: The Punjab government has reportedly withdrawn the official security provided to the sons of former prime minister and senior PPP leader Yousaf Raza Gilani. According to sources familiar with the development, security personnel assigned to Ali Haider Gilani and his brothers have been recalled without prior notice. The move has raised serious concerns within the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) over the timing and motive behind the decision.
Party officials described the action as abrupt and ill-considered, warning that it could endanger individuals who have previously faced security threats. The development has quickly become a flashpoint between the PPP and the provincial administration.
Ali Haider Gilani Expresses Deep Concern
Ali Haider Gilani, who survived a high-profile kidnapping in 2013, voiced his alarm over the decision. He reminded authorities of his long-standing security risks due to past terrorist threats. “I have been a target of terrorism for many years, and my life remains at risk,” he stated.
Calling the government’s step “an extremely irresponsible decision,” he urged officials to reconsider the withdrawal. His remarks reflected frustration and disbelief at what he viewed as neglect of a serious security matter.
PPP Condemns the Government’s Decision
Leaders of the Pakistan Peoples Party strongly criticized the Punjab government’s move. They described it as reckless and insensitive, given the family’s history of facing life-threatening situations. The PPP leadership also questioned the motives behind the withdrawal, suggesting it could be politically influenced.
Party representatives emphasized that protecting citizens, especially those under threat, remains the state’s foremost duty. They demanded that the government restore security immediately to prevent any potential tragedy.
The issue has added to political tensions in Punjab, as opposition leaders accuse the provincial authorities of mishandling sensitive security affairs. Meanwhile, the Gilani family continues to express grave concern for their safety.
