LAHORE: The Punjab government has planned a large-scale operation against theatre halls across the province, including Lahore, to curb ongoing violations of cultural and legal regulations.
Authorities Monitor Theatres and Artists
According to official sources, the decision followed extensive monitoring of more than 20 actors and actresses who are violating performance guidelines. A comprehensive report detailing theatre activities throughout Punjab has been submitted to Provincial Minister Azma Bokhari for further action.
The report revealed that while several theatres are operating in compliance with the law under the supervision of Grade-17 officers, many others are engaged in misconduct and breaching government regulations.
Widespread Complaints from Multiple Districts
Officials said complaints had been received from several districts, including Sheikhupura, Sahiwal, Okara, Rahim Yar Khan, Faisalabad, and Kasur. Theatres in these areas reportedly violated content and performance rules despite multiple warnings.
They added that after junior staff such as clerks and peons were removed from monitoring duties, a number of theatre halls came under renewed scrutiny for improper practices. Authorities believe that inadequate supervision in recent months may have contributed to the increase in violations.
Government Introduces E-Monitoring for Better Oversight
Meanwhile, the Punjab Arts Council has started developing an advanced e-monitoring system to enhance oversight of theatre performances across the province. The digital platform will help ensure transparency and real-time compliance with cultural and legal standards.
Officials said the system will allow provincial authorities to track performances, monitor content, and take swift action against any violations. The initiative aims to restore public confidence in stage entertainment and uphold cultural values.
Crackdown Expected to Begin Soon
Sources confirmed that the Home Department plans to initiate the new crackdown within the coming weeks. The move seeks to regulate the theatre industry, promote responsible performances, and prevent the spread of objectionable content.
