Classes to Resume on September 1 Amid Ongoing Rain and Heatwave Concerns
The Punjab government has officially extended summer vacations in all public and private schools across the province until August 31, with academic activities scheduled to resume from September 1.
The announcement was made by Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat, who cited ongoing adverse weather conditions — including heavy rainfall, high humidity, and periods of extreme heat — as the primary reasons for the decision. Originally, schools were expected to reopen earlier in August, but the government opted to prioritize the health and safety of students.
“Given the current weather patterns, including intense heat and rainfall, it is not suitable for children to return to school yet,” said the minister.
Rain, Heat, and Health Risks Prompt Action
Large parts of Punjab have been experiencing unpredictable monsoon activity, with alternating periods of intermittent rainfall and high temperatures. In some areas, the heat index has soared due to elevated humidity levels, raising concerns about students’ wellbeing, particularly in institutions without adequate ventilation or cooling systems.
The education department stressed that the extension is a preventive measure, aimed at avoiding potential health complications such as heatstroke, dehydration, and weather-related illnesses among schoolchildren.
Parents and teachers across the province have welcomed the move, noting that it reflects a sensible approach to managing the risks posed by the ongoing unfavourable weather.
School administrations have been advised to stay alert for further updates and ensure that buildings are safe and prepared for reopening on September 1.
