Punjab Airline to Start with Seven Aircraft for Domestic Routes
LAHORE: The Punjab government has officially announced the launch timeline for Punjab Airline, the provinceโs own airline, with its first flight expected to begin operations in April. The move marks a major step toward strengthening Punjabโs aviation sector through a provincially owned carrier.
According to government sources, Punjab Airline will acquire seven aircraft in the initial phase. The airline will operate domestic flights only during its first two years. After completing this period, officials plan to expand the airlineโs network to international destinations, depending on operational readiness and demand.
Meanwhile, sources disclosed that the Chief Minister of Punjabโs existing helicopter will be included in the airlineโs fleet. For official travel, the chief minister will use aircraft operated by Punjab Airline. As a result, the government will not purchase any separate aircraft for official use.
Officials said the decision aims to avoid placing an additional burden on the national exchequer. Therefore, both existing and newly purchased aircraft will be operated on a fully commercial basis to support profitability and long-term sustainability.
Under the policy framework, Punjab Airlineโs aircraft will serve both passenger operations and official travel needs. However, authorities said that whenever the chief minister travels through the airline, the standard fare will be paid. This approach, they added, will maintain transparency while ensuring the carrier functions as a commercial enterprise.
The government believes the airline could improve connectivity within the country and create a foundation for future international operations.
