Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has unveiled a comprehensive support package for students, including 50,000 merit-based scholarships, 100,000 free electric bikes, and interest-free loans, all aimed at empowering youth through education and technology.
Speaking at a scholarship distribution ceremony at Bahauddin Zakaria University, the Chief Minister emphasized the provincial government’s commitment to merit-based programs, stating that all scholarships would be awarded purely on merit, with no political influences. “Education is the foundation of progress,” she remarked, stressing the importance of education in shaping the future.
Maryam Nawaz congratulated the scholarship recipients, along with their families and teachers, recognizing the challenges many families face in ensuring their children receive an education. “As your Chief Minister, and as a mother to all of you, I am deeply proud of your achievements,” she added.
Scholarships and Interest-Free Loans
The Chief Minister also revealed plans to expand the scholarship program in the coming year, offering scholarships to 50,000 students. Future initiatives will include international scholarships, and full tuition fees will be covered for students attending both public and private institutions.
Additionally, Maryam Nawaz announced a new interest-free loan scheme, providing up to Rs 30 million for students interested in launching startups or businesses. “This initiative is designed to encourage youth entrepreneurship, helping secure their futures,” she said.
Electric Bike Initiative
Focusing on environmental sustainability, Maryam Nawaz highlighted the distribution of 30,000 electric bikes, with plans to provide 100,000 bikes next year. “This initiative benefits students and contributes to reducing air pollution,” she stated, also revealing that discussions are underway with a Chinese company to set up an e-bike manufacturing unit in Punjab.
The Chief Minister urged greater focus on education in fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and science and technology. “Our goal is to equip students with the skills they need for success in an increasingly digital world,” she said.
Maryam Nawaz also commended the Higher Education Commission and Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar for their continued support in advancing educational programs in the province.
Veiled Criticism of Imran Khan
In a subtle critique of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, the Chief Minister urged students not to be swayed by those advocating for unrest. “Do not allow yourselves to be used as tools of disruption, whether it’s blocking roads or engaging in violence,” she warned, underscoring the importance of progress within democratic and lawful boundaries.
Maryam Nawaz also expressed disappointment over the actions of some young people who had recently apologized after being misled. “While differing views are natural in a democracy, we must always act with civility and responsibility,” she concluded.
