CM Maryam Nawaz Highlights Government’s Duty to Support Religious Leaders
The Punjab government has approved a monthly stipend for imams serving in more than 65,000 mosques across the province, marking a significant step toward improving the welfare of religious leaders. The decision was made during the fifth consecutive meeting on law and order, chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
Speaking at the meeting, CM Maryam Nawaz emphasized that imams play a vital social and spiritual role in guiding communities and therefore deserve both respect and financial stability. She described the move as part of the government’s moral and administrative responsibility to support imams, particularly those serving in small towns and rural areas.
“It is inappropriate to rely on public donations to pay mosque imams,” she said, adding that the state must take ownership of their financial security. The new stipend program aims to provide a consistent and dignified source of income for imams across Punjab, ensuring they can perform their duties without financial hardship.
Mosque Development, Security Measures, and Digital Reforms
The meeting also approved the inclusion of mosque construction and repair projects in the Annual Development Programme (ADP). CM Maryam directed the relevant departments to expedite these projects, stressing that mosques serve as important spiritual and community centres that require proper upkeep and infrastructure.
In preparation for the upcoming Raiwind Tableeghi Ijtima, the chief minister announced that roads leading to the venue have been repaired, while a special bus service will operate to facilitate the large number of participants. Authorities have also implemented foolproof security arrangements to ensure the event’s smooth and safe conduct.
In another major decision, the Punjab government approved the establishment of a cybercrime cell to counter emerging digital threats and strengthen law enforcement capabilities in cyberspace. CM Maryam also issued directives for strict action against the illegal use of loudspeakers, underscoring the need to maintain public order and compliance with provincial laws.
The series of initiatives reflects the Punjab government’s broader agenda of social welfare, religious inclusivity, and digital modernization, aligning with CM Maryam Nawaz’s vision of a more responsive and people-centric governance model.
