Junaid Akbar, a Member of National Assembly (MNA) from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been elected unopposed as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Friday. The position had remained vacant since the government took office following the February 2024 elections.
The PAC is one of the most influential parliamentary bodies, with the power to summon individuals and documents from government departments regarding financial matters.
In line with parliamentary tradition since the 2008 general elections, the chairmanship of the PAC is typically awarded to a member from the opposition. This practice continues to be followed.
During the meeting to elect the PAC chairman, Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Omar Ayub proposed Junaid Akbar’s name for the role.
Initially, PTI had nominated MNA Sher Afzal Marwat for the position, but later replaced him with Sheikh Waqas Akram, the party’s spokesperson, before settling on Akbar for the role.
