ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder appeared before an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Rawalpindi on Tuesday via WhatsApp. The hearing concerned the May 9 GHQ attack case, with the court facilitating a conversation between him and his legal team.
Defence Boycotts Proceedings
However, defence lawyers complained of poor audio and unclear video quality during the call. Due to these disruptions, they boycotted the court proceedings. Lawyer Faisal Malik stated that the defence would not participate unless given a proper opportunity to consult with their client.
Court Dismisses Petitions
After arguments from both sides, the court dismissed two petitions filed by the PTI founder. Defence counsel Faisal Malik and Salman Akram Raja appeared on behalf of the PTI founder, while Special Prosecutors Zaheer Shah and Ikram Amin represented the state with their legal team.
Debate on WhatsApp Communication
The court responded to the defence complaints, saying they had been facilitated earlier but had boycotted the last hearing. The court noted, “You may challenge the WhatsApp communication in the High Court.” Malik replied that the matter was already challenged, adding that a WhatsApp call cannot replace a formal video link.
Court Refuses to Halt Trial
The court maintained that trial proceedings would continue, leaving the defence free to challenge its orders. Prosecutor Ikram Amin argued that the defence repeatedly wasted time, alternating between walkouts and requests for delays. He claimed their conduct showed no seriousness toward the trial.
Prosecution Witnesses Testify
During the hearing, eight prosecution witnesses gave statements. The court then summoned more witnesses to appear at the next hearing. The GHQ attack case hearing was adjourned until September 27.
