The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has officially approved the use of the 6 GHz spectrum band (5925–6425 MHz) for Wi-Fi 7, marking a major step toward the adoption of next-generation wireless technology in the country.
Wi-Fi 7: A Leap Forward in Connectivity
Wi-Fi 7, the latest standard in wireless communication, is expected to revolutionize internet connectivity in Pakistan. According to the authority, the technology will provide the fastest data rates ever experienced in the country. With higher speed, reduced latency, and improved stability, Wi-Fi 7 will transform digital access across households, businesses, and public institutions.
The technology is designed to support demanding applications such as ultra-high-definition video streaming, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and advanced industrial automation. Additionally, it is expected to lower broadband costs by easing pressure on older spectrum bands while delivering more reliable connections.
This means that sectors like healthcare, education, manufacturing, and smart city initiatives will see significant benefits. Reliable connectivity will also help improve telemedicine, online learning, and industrial IoT applications.
Pakistan Among Early Adopters
By approving Wi-Fi 7, Pakistan joins the ranks of early adopters in the Asia-Pacific region. This move demonstrates the country’s readiness to embrace modern digital infrastructure at par with global standards.
Wi-Fi 7’s capability to provide minimal latency and robust reliability makes it particularly valuable for emerging technologies such as 8K video streaming, cloud-based gaming, and next-generation enterprise solutions.
The approval follows earlier steps that allowed Wi-Fi 6E, showcasing Pakistan’s steady digital progression. Each new development underscores the country’s efforts to enhance internet accessibility and create a more future-ready digital ecosystem.
Aligned with Broader Digital Transformation
This advancement also aligns with the government’s push for digital transformation. Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, recently announced that Pakistan is preparing to launch 5G services in seven major cities within months.
She highlighted these initiatives while speaking at the 26th ITCN Asia Expo in Karachi, noting that the government is also working on measures to ensure stronger and more reliable internet nationwide.
The minister stressed that information technology will serve as a central component of Pakistan’s recently signed digital cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia. This partnership is expected to accelerate digital infrastructure development and support economic growth.
Economic Stability and Digital Growth
Shaza Fatima Khawaja also emphasized that Pakistan has overcome its earlier economic challenges. With inflation declining and macroeconomic indicators improving, the country is now focusing on strengthening technology-driven growth. She described Karachi as the economic backbone of Pakistan, carrying much of the responsibility for national development.
The approval of Wi-Fi 7 reflects not only a technological milestone but also a strategic step toward building a more connected, efficient, and globally competitive Pakistan. With high-speed internet and advanced digital applications becoming essential in daily life, the country’s adoption of this technology signals a bold move into the future.
