ISLAMABAD: In a noteworthy development, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has appointed Khalil Hashmi as the new ambassador of Pakistan to China. Additionally, Muhammad Khalid Jamali has been approved as the ambassador of Pakistan to Russia.
The Prime Minister made these decisions after reviewing the summary presented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Muhammad Khalid Jamali, who is currently serving as Pakistan’s ambassador to Poland, will take up his new role as the ambassador to Russia.
Khalil Hashmi, on the other hand, holds the position of the Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva. He will now assume the role of ambassador to China.
Muhammad Khalid Jamali
Muhammad Khalid Jamali has indeed built an impressive career in the Foreign Service of Pakistan since joining in 1995. Throughout his tenure, he has taken on various important roles, such as serving as Section Officer from 1997 to 2000, Deputy Director in 2002, Director from 2010 to 2013, and Director General between 2016 and 2018.
Additionally, he gained valuable diplomatic experience through assignments in Pakistan Missions abroad. He served in New Delhi on two occasions, first from 2001 to 2002 and then from 2003 to 2007. He also had diplomatic postings in Ankara from 2007 to 2010 and Brussels from 2013 to 2016.
Moreover, Muhammad Khalid Jamali held the position of Joint Secretary with the Prime Minister’s Office from August 2018 to September 2019, further contributing to Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts and international relations. His extensive experience and diverse assignments have undoubtedly prepared him well for his new role as Pakistan’s ambassador to Russia.
Khalil Hashmi
Khalil Hashmi’s diplomatic career is indeed remarkable, marked by diverse and significant roles. He assumed the position of Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva on 10 November 2019.
Prior to this appointment, he served as Director General (United Nations) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also held other important portfolios, including Director General for the European region, Director General Arms Control, and Director for Disarmament Affairs, India, and South Asia region, contributing to critical policy areas.
Khalil Hashmi’s diplomatic assignments have taken him to various parts of the world. He had bilateral postings at Pakistan Embassies in Copenhagen from 1999 to 2002 and Beijing from 2008 to 2010. Additionally, he served twice at Pakistan Mission to the United Nations in New York, first from 2004 to 2007 and then from 2012 to 2016, during which he also held the position of Deputy Permanent Representative.
His extensive experience covers a wide range of policy issues, including arms control, counter-terrorism, human rights, and climate change, among others. This background makes him well-equipped to handle complex international matters as the Permanent Representative in Geneva.
