ISLAMABAD: On the eve of the International Day of Parliamentarism, President Asif Ali Zardari emphasized the vital role of Pakistanโs Parliament in upholding democratic values, inclusive governance, and constitutional integrity.
In a statement on June 30, President Zardari referred to Parliament as the โsovereign representative of the people and the guardian of constitutional values,โ stressing its role in shaping national policy, defending fundamental freedoms, and ensuring transparency and accountability in governance.
โToday, we observe the International Day of Parliamentarism by renewing our commitment to democracy, inclusivity, tolerance, and socio-economic justice,โ the president said.
He noted that Parliamentโs legislative and oversight functions are essential for improving public service delivery and strengthening democratic institutions. Zardari expressed confidence that the institution would continue to legislate for public welfare, protect citizen rights, and promote inclusive governance.
โLet us build a Pakistan where democracy thrives through strong institutions and where every citizenโs voice is heard and respected,โ he concluded.
The International Day of Parliamentarism, observed annually on June 30, was established by the United Nations to recognize the essential role of parliaments in promoting transparency, representation, and sustainable development.
Meanwhile, marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, President Zardari reiterated the governmentโs unwavering resolve to create a drug-free Pakistan. He called for a comprehensive and coordinated approach to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse, noting that it remains a top national priority.
He urged all segments of society to play their part in building a healthier, safer nation.
