ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and United States Ambassador Donald Blome convened on Monday in Islamabad, with the shared objective of enhancing bilateral trade between their nations. Their meeting underscored the critical importance of fostering opportunities for cooperation across various sectors.
President Zardari emphasized the need to attract investment from American companies into Pakistan, urging them to bring innovative ideas that could contribute to the country’s economic growth. He reiterated the longstanding and multifaceted relationship between Pakistan and the US, spanning over seven decades, and highlighted the necessity of nurturing this relationship further.
Furthermore, President Zardari reiterated the paramount importance of revitalizing Pakistan’s economy and addressing the prevalent economic and security challenges. He acknowledged Pakistan’s vulnerability to the adverse impacts of climate change, emphasizing the need for collective action to address this global issue.
Ambassador Blome extended his congratulations to President Zardari on his second presidential term and expressed optimism about the potential for increased cooperation between the two countries. He specifically mentioned areas such as trade, investment, climate change, and renewable energy as potential avenues for collaboration.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to reflect on the historical fluctuations in the US-Pakistan relationship, characterized by periods of both closeness and estrangement. Earlier discussions with Pakistan’s newly elected National Assembly speaker, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, also emphasized the importance of the US-Pakistan relationship within the context of Pakistan’s foreign policy. Ambassador Blome reiterated Washington’s commitment to assisting Pakistan in addressing its financial and regional security challenges during his meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
