Sindh’s senior minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Sunday demanded that local body elections be held in Punjab, questioning why the province has not yet conducted polls while others have already completed theirs.
Addressing a press conference in Karachi, he said the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) demand was clear: Punjab must hold local government elections without further delay. He noted that deadlines given for these polls were not honored, raising concerns about transparency and democratic processes.
Memon strongly criticized the Punjab government, accusing it of running a one-sided campaign against the PPP and the Sindh administration.
He warned that efforts to create political rifts for partisan gain would not be allowed to succeed, emphasizing the need for cooperation rather than division. He urged the federal government to facilitate constructive political dialogue and called on parties to avoid confrontational politics that harm democratic norms.
The minister also reiterated the PPP’s longstanding appeal for the federal government to engage international organizations and countries responsible for climate change in order to secure support for communities devastated by floods. This stance, he said, aligns with PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto’s position on mobilizing global assistance for climate-hit populations.
Turning to Sindh’s relief measures, Memon highlighted the provincial government’s housing programme for flood victims. He said the Sindh government had launched the construction and distribution of 2.1 million houses to rehabilitate families affected by the devastating floods, describing the initiative as one of the largest of its kind.
In his remarks, Memon also lashed out at political opponents and media spokespersons who, he claimed, are fueling unnecessary division. “Don’t spread the fire of hatred, call your speechwriters to shut up,” he said, insisting that the PPP remains focused on governance and the welfare of the poor despite criticism.
