ISLAMABAD: The proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment has been categorically rejected by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari stated that his party would not make any compromise on provincial rights or financial autonomy. After a meeting of the Central Executive Council (CEC), the PPP leader turned down most of the proposals of the proposed 27th amendment. Bilawal Bhutto, nonetheless, accepted the formation of a constitutional court.
Rejection of NFC Award Changes
It was firmly asserted by Bilawal that any change to the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award or reduction in provincial shares would not be supported. He stressed that the PPPโs position on protecting provinces from financial centralization had remained unchanged since the partyโs inception.
Charter of Democracy Principles Reaffirmed
The establishment of a constitutional court had been reiterated by Bilawal as part of the Charter of Democracy (CoD). However, it was emphasized that the court must include equal representation from all provinces. This approach, it was stated, would ensure federal balance and justice across Pakistan.
Coalition Consultations Intensified
Meanwhile, efforts to secure a consensus on the amendment have been intensified by the government. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was joined in meetings by coalition partners, including PPP, MQM, IPP, and PML-Q. Comprehensive discussions were reported to have taken place to ensure the smooth passage of the bill.
Joint Committee to Review Amendment
It has also been decided by the government that a joint parliamentary committee will review the amendmentโs clauses. Sources confirmed that Farooq H. Naek is expected to chair the committee, which will include members from both government and opposition parties. The Senate will formally approve the committeeโs formation tomorrow.
