ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has officially designated former Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani as its candidate for the Senate chairmanship.
The Senate secretariat promptly issued a notification to formalize this nomination.
In recent days, the Senate secretariat had hinted at conducting timely elections for both the chairman and deputy chairman positions.
Despite the Senate elections in the KP Assembly being postponed, sources suggest that this delay is unlikely to hinder the proceedings related to the oath-taking ceremony of the senators and the election of the chairman and deputy chairman.
As per the Election Act, senators are required to disclose election expenses within five days of their election. Subsequently, the Election Commission of Pakistan will issue notifications to the newly-elected senators.
Insiders familiar with the situation have revealed that it is the government’s obligation to convene the Senate session promptly after the notification.
Following Senate rules, the first session will be convened to administer oaths to the newly-elected senators, and it is imperative to elect the chairman and deputy chairman during this session.
The process of electing the chairman and deputy chairman remains an internal affair of the Senate, as affirmed by judicial decisions stating that parliamentary internal proceedings are not subject to challenge.
