ISLAMABAD: The federal government has made a decision to assign the chairmanship of the Public Accounts Committee to the Sunni Ittehad Council, which has become the new political home for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf lawmakers, as per sources reported.
According to sources, the Pakistan Muslim League-N will receive 12 chairmanships of standing committees in the National Assembly, while the SIC will be granted nine chairmanships, including the PAC.
Additionally, the Pakistan People’s Party will be allocated the chairmanship of seven standing committees, the sources added.
It is noteworthy that the Sunni Ittehad Council had officially nominated Sheikh Waqas Akram for the chairmanship of the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee.
However, this appointment led to a dispute and sparked internal strife within the senior ranks of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, with Sher Afzal Marwat, who had been previously named by the party, openly criticizing the party leadership.
On May 11, the PTI issued a show-cause notice to Sher Afzal Marwat for making ‘irresponsible’ statements.
The notice was served by PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub Khan, requesting Marwat to provide an explanation for his statements within three days, which were deemed detrimental to the party’s image.
The notice underscored that such statements run counter to the party’s disciplinary code and contravene the explicit directives of the party’s founder, Imran Khan, who has stressed the significance of responsible conduct.
Sher Afzal Marwat was cautioned that a lack of response or an unsatisfactory explanation could result in additional disciplinary measures.
The issuance of the show-cause notice followed Sher Afzal Marwat’s statement, in which he asserted that he would not allow three individuals to ‘hijack’ the party.
He emphasized that the purported decision by PTI founder Imran Khan to appoint someone else as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee had not been communicated to the PTI’s political committee.
