ISLAMABAD: On Sunday, Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani accepted the resignation of former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shaukat Tarin from the upper house of Parliament. Shaukat Tarin, the former finance minister, met with Sadiq Sanjrani in Dubai and formally tendered his resignation during the meeting.
Earlier on Friday, Shaukat Tarin had decided to quit the PTI and politics for good, citing financial and health reasons.
“The last two years were very difficult for me due to health and financial issues. Therefore, at the insistence of my family and friends, I have decided to resign from active politics for good,” the former finance minister said.
It’s worth noting that Shaukat Tarin was appointed as the finance minister by the PTI government on April 17, 2021. However, as he was not elected to Parliament, his constitutional term ended on October 16.
Subsequently, he was appointed as the finance adviser to the prime minister. In December 2021, the PTI government successfully secured Tarin’s election as a senator, allowing him to resume his role as finance minister.
ECP Renews Plea for Judicial Officers’ Appointment in Election Staffing
Meanwhile, in a final effort to ensure an adequate workforce for the upcoming polls, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has once again appealed to the judiciary, requesting the provision of judicial officers to serve as district returning officers and returning officers.
A senior ECP official revealed that the high courts of the four provinces previously declined to release their officers for the general elections scheduled for February 8. Despite this, the electoral body has decided to reiterate its request, seeking cooperation from the judiciary.
The official stated, “The situation regarding the appointment of district returning officers and returning officers will hopefully be clarified by Monday. If the judiciary declines again, officers from the district administration will be appointed for election duties, along with staff members from the commission.”
