Punjab Govt introduces new defamation law to regulate social media

LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: The Punjab government has introduced a new defamation law that will also regulate social media.

Addressing a press conference in Lahore on Wednesday, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari stated, “No one will be allowed to insult others on social media anymore. The affected person can file an application through the tribunal, and the defamation case must be resolved within 180 days.”

She added, “Three proceedings will be held within 21 days.” Bukhari emphasized the need to end the cycle of hurling allegations against each other.

Recently, Bukhari claimed that the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was the “mastermind” behind the vandalism on May 9.

Reflecting on the events of May 9 last year, Bukhari said, “Every Pakistani is hurt by remembering what happened on May 9.”

She continued, “An extremist political group attacked the Pakistan Army. The May 9 chaos was the biggest conspiracy against the country. Military installations were targeted in a planned effort to malign the institution.”

Bukhari stressed, “It is crucial to bring those responsible for the May 9 incidents to justice to move the country forward.”

Earlier, Bukhari asserted that PTI would not be permitted to engage in vandalism.

In an exclusive interview, Azma discussed the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, stating, “We will need to pursue a new program with the IMF.”

She highlighted the importance of boosting investment in the country.
