Vote Rigging
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protests against alleged vote rigging culminated in a series of arrests, including key figures Latif Khosa and Salman Akram Raja, along with more than 20 supporters in Lahore on Sunday. The demonstrations spanned major cities, triggering a response from law enforcement.
Cantt superintendent of police arrested Latif Khosa before the protest, as confirmed by Shahbaz Khosa. Salman Akram Raja was detained in Ichhra, followed by the arrest of Haasan Mehmood, son of Mehmoodur Rashid, from Shadman Town.
MPA Haroon Akbar, brother of Akram Usman, and Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen leader Zaheer Abbas Naqvi were also among those detained in Ichhra.
Police deployments in Lahore, Peshawar, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi aimed to maintain “law and order” as PTI’s protests unfolded. The gatherings, a response to alleged vote rigging, faced legal restrictions in Islamabad under Section 144 of the CrPC, with warnings of legal action against unauthorized assemblies.
PTI leader Sher Afzal Marwat led processions in Islamabad, where a substantial crowd gathered outside the Islamabad Press Club. In Karachi, the protest at Dawood Chowrangi concluded by 5 pm.
Addressing supporters, PTI’s Shoaib Shaheen claimed a “mafia” had taken control of the country, targeting PML-N and PPP as alleged money-laundering “mafias.”
Accusing the Election Commission of Pakistan of facilitating the emergence of “illegal MNAs,” he pledged to safeguard people’s rights. Senator Faisal Javed hailed Imran Khan as a leader comparable to Muhammad Ali Jinnah and demanded the release of incarcerated leaders.
KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur alleged foreign interference, called for a fair trial for PTI founder Imran Khan, and demanded the return of reserved seats.
Gandapur assured that the protests would remain peaceful while reiterating demands for Chief Election Commissioner Sikander Sultan Raja’s resignation.
