LAHORE/ISLAMABAD: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore sent PTI leader Yasmin Rashid to jail for a 14-day judicial remand. The court gave remand over her remarks against state institutions and her involvement in the May 9 riots.
The arrest of Imran Khan on May 9 had led to widespread violence. PTI leaders and supporters attacked important military installations. It prompted the state to launch a stringent crackdown against his party.
Although Imran Khan was released a few days later, many PTI workers and are still facing court proceedings on serious charges.
Last month, a Lahore ATC had granted permission for the police to re-interrogate several PTI leaders, including Rashid. Several PTI activists also faced cases related to the May 9 riots.
Meanwhile, police added new charges such as mutiny and waging war against the state.
Last week, the police obtained a five-day physical remand of Yasmin Rashid in the incendiary speeches she made on May 9 against state institutions.
Earlier, ATC Judge Abher Gul Khan granted judicial remand of Yasmin Rashid after the completion of her physical remand.
However, the police did not request an extension of her physical remand. As a result, the court ordered her to be placed in jail for a 14-day judicial remand.
Additionally, the court granted Rashid’s request to visit Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital.
Rashid had submitted the application through her lawyer, Advocate Rana Mudassar. The application highlighted that Yasmin Rashid a 74-year-old cancer patient with multiple other ailments, had raised her health concerns in court. Despite being admitted to the hospital, she had not received adequate medical treatment.
The application stressed that she had previously received treatment at Shaukat Khanum and required “proper care” from the same facility.
In granting Rashid’s request, Judge Khan acknowledged that she was a “high-risk case” under “close follow-up.” The written order directed the superintendent of the Central Jail, Lahore to facilitate Rashid’s treatment at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital, Lahore, for her production when required.
