PTI Declares No Hindrance to IMF Programme Progress

IMF Programme

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Omar Ayub Khan reiterated his party’s commitment to not obstruct the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme, highlighting the importance of transparency and accountability in electoral processes.

Speaking alongside former PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan in Islamabad, Khan emphasized the necessity of fair elections, citing an IMF condition for transparent elections to secure a loan. He underscored the need for scrutiny in response to alleged rigging during recent general elections.

Addressing fiscal responsibility, Khan stated that PTI aimed for loans to be utilized for reforms rather than excessive expenses. Gohar Ali Khan confirmed PTI’s formal communication of this stance to the IMF, affirming the party’s commitment to not hinder the IMF programme.

Earlier on the same day, PTI urged the IMF to consider Pakistan’s political stability in future bailout talks, with a letter detailing the party’s position reportedly sent to the IMF. The letter, yet to be received by the IMF, is expected to shed more light on PTI’s perspective.

As the standby arrangement with the IMF is set to expire in April, analysts anticipate a new government, potentially formed by Khan’s opponents, will seek additional funds from the IMF.

The global lender, focused on completing the standby programme, expressed readiness to support the post-election government through a new arrangement to address ongoing challenges.

PTI’s proactive communication with the IMF reflects the party’s stance on fiscal responsibility and commitment to transparency in the electoral process, with the potential for more details to be disclosed in the future.
