ISLAMABAD: Opposition parties reached a consensus on Tuesday that the ongoing national crisis requires a collective effort from all democratic forces to guide the country toward stability and recovery, The News reported.
Tehreek Tahafuz Aiyeen-e-Pakistan chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai hosted a dinner in honor of opposition leaders, bringing together prominent political figures including Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Asad Qaiser, National Assembly Opposition Leader Omar Ayub Khan, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Allama Nasir Abbas, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Shibli Faraz, Sardar Latif Khosa, Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, Junaid Akbar, Atif Khan, Shahram Tarakai, Sardar Shafiq Tareen, Aslam Ghori, Akhunzada Hussain, and others.
The leaders expressed surprise over the meeting between an International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation and Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi, calling it unprecedented. They also voiced concerns over the country’s economic situation, questioning how the economy could improve without the rule of law and a functioning justice system.
The opposition leaders also raised alarm about the law and order situation across Pakistan, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. They criticized the federal government for its failure to protect citizens’ lives and property.
The leaders agreed to organize an all-party conference in the future to strengthen mutual relations and tackle the country’s challenges. A steering committee, led by Abbasi, was also established to draft a national agenda. The committee will include Qaiser, Faraz, Murtaza, Khokhar, Raza, Tareen, Shirazi, Talmund, and Akhunzada.
Additionally, the opposition reiterated its demand for immediate transparent and free elections, calling for the resignation of the Election Commission and the establishment of an independent commission.
The meeting condemned the grave violations of basic human rights and demanded the immediate release of all political prisoners, including Imran Khan.
