Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has expressed approval of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Founder Imran Khan’s decision to allow his party’s participation in the prime minister’s All-Party Conference.
Speaking exclusively to Samaa TV, Asif underscored the significance of inclusive national decision-making and praised PTI’s move as a positive development.
“Asif noted a perceptible change in the atmosphere surrounding the PTI founder. It appears he harbors a longstanding desire to negotiate with the establishment, which remains unchanged,” he remarked.
He clarified that there is no individual initiative within the military establishment to engage in talks with PTI and reiterated the government’s readiness to engage in dialogue with the party.
Highlighting the importance of collective efforts in addressing national challenges, Asif emphasized, “The participation of all parties, large and small, in national decisions would be a commendable initiative.” He stressed that the ongoing counter-terrorism operation is a matter of national concern, transcending political boundaries.
Khawaja Asif also acknowledged the cooperation extended by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government for Operation Azm-e-Istehkam. “The chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa did not oppose the operation. His approach was positive then and remains positive,” Asif observed.
Reflecting on Imran Khan’s tenure as Prime Minister, Asif remarked, “The PTI founder governed for four years. He had the opportunity to file cases against me, but he realized this opportunity very late.”
Despite past disagreements, Asif hinted at a potential shift in Imran Khan’s stance, suggesting a “sympathetic inclination in his heart.”
Regarding the government’s stance on dialogue, Asif reaffirmed, “The government’s offer of dialogue with PTI remains open. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has extended invitations for dialogue to PTI on three or four occasions. Politicians never shut doors; Imran Khan’s approach is non-political.”
Asif also touched upon PTI’s interest in engaging with the military establishment, stating, “PTI’s desire for dialogue with the military establishment is well-known. The establishment has historically supported PTI.” He indicated that Imran Khan’s willingness to initiate discussions signals a shift in his political strategy.
