ISLAMABAD: The federal government has called a session of the National Assembly (NA) to pass a proposed constitutional amendment.
According to details, the draft for the 26th Amendment to the Constitution of Pakistan will be presented in the lower house of Parliament on October 17.
Sources indicate that lawmakers have been instructed to arrive in Islamabad by tomorrow.
Meanwhile, JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman stated that political parties are close to reaching a consensus on the proposed constitutional amendments.
Speaking to the media, Moulana said an agreement had been reached on the draft shared among the parties. “I will meet with Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Nawaz Sharif, and the PTI leadership,” he added.
Rehman mentioned plans to meet with Bilawal in Karachi, visit Lahore to speak with Nawaz Sharif, and talk with PTI leaders in Islamabad.
Sources reveal that over 20 clauses are expected to be part of the proposed changes, impacting key articles of the Constitution, including Articles 51, 63, 175, and 187.
One of the amendments involves increasing Balochistan’s representation in the provincial assembly by raising the number of seats from 65 to 81. This is intended to enhance the province’s legislative representation.
Changes to Article 63, which addresses the disqualification of parliament members, are also expected. These will include provisions related to the voting behavior of defecting members of the assembly.
