Punjab CM
LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly is poised for a significant one-to-one contest for the chief minister (CM) position as the nomination papers of PML-N nominee Maryam Nawaz and Sunni Ittehad Council’s (SIC) Rana Aftab have been declared valid after scrutiny, on Sunday.
The deadline for the submission of nomination papers was Sunday noon, announced by the newly-elected Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Ahmed Khan.
Malik Ahmed Khan, responsible for the verification of nomination papers, confirmed that the election for the coveted CM position would take place in Monday’s assembly session. Maryam Nawaz, nominated as the PML-N candidate for the chief minister post, is set to face Rana Aftab in the electoral showdown.
Meanwhile, PTI named Rana Aftab Ahmed Khan as its new candidate after the attempted arrest of its earlier nominee, Mian Aslam Iqbal, by the provincial police.
PTI leader Hammad Azhar explained that Imran Khan had initially nominated Iqbal for the post, but due to the police presence to arrest him, the party leadership decided to nominate Rana Aftab after consultations.
Rana Aftab, the SIC candidate, expressed confidence in winning the CM seat and urged the authorities to allow SIC’s elected members to join the assembly for the leader of the House election.
With a substantial number of candidates, the PML-N, along with its allies, holds a clear majority in the House, making Maryam Nawaz a strong contender for the top position.
The oath-taking ceremony on Friday saw 321 out of 371 members of the Punjab Assembly taking their oaths. In the speaker and deputy speaker elections, PML-N secured victories, with Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan elected as PA Speaker and Malik Zaheer Ahmed Channer as the Deputy Speaker, reinforcing the party’s dominance in the assembly.
