Marwat Reconciles with PTI Leaders Following Meeting with Imran Khan

Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD: On Saturday, Sher Afzal Marwat, a prominent and outspoken member of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), declared that he had resolved his differences with the party leadership following a significant meeting with PTI’s founder, Imran Khan.

Marwat, known for his fiery rhetoric and recent controversies, made the announcement outside Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail after meeting Khan, who is currently incarcerated.

Marwat shared details of his meeting with Khan, stating, “I met Imran Khan today after a gap of three months.” He described the encounter as a gesture of reconciliation, noting, “I shook hands with him and the PTI founder hugged me. There was an exchange of complaints from both sides.”

This meeting marked a turning point for Marwat, who had been involved in a heated verbal conflict with fellow PTI leaders over recent months.

Despite his recent challenges, including the suspension of his basic party membership earlier this month for alleged violations of party discipline, Marwat expressed his commitment to reconciling with the PTI leadership.

He indicated that the meeting with Khan and the subsequent assurance from the PTI founder had prompted him to put aside his disagreements with the party.

Marwat emphasized that only Khan had the authority to expel him from the party and extended his apologies for his earlier statements against party leaders.

Looking ahead, Marwat outlined his future plans, revealing that he had been assigned the task of organizing a major PTI event scheduled for August 22.

He relayed a clear message from PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, who stressed the importance of maintaining unity within the party and ensuring that internal differences do not resurface.

Marwat’s controversial remarks earlier this year, including claims that Saudi Arabia had played a role in the ousting of Khan’s government in 2022, had significantly strained his relationship with the PTI leadership.

His statements led to a severe backlash from within the party and resulted in a show-cause notice issued to him by the PTI’s top leadership.

In August, the PTI had taken the drastic step of canceling Marwat’s basic membership, citing “gross violation/breach” of party discipline.

However, this decision was met with internal discord among PTI’s leadership, with some officials, including PTI Additional Secretary General Firdous Shamim Naqvi, contesting the legitimacy of the notification and labeling it as “fake.”

Marwat’s recent actions and the reconciliation with Khan signify a potential easing of tensions within PTI, as the party seeks to navigate through its internal challenges and maintain cohesion among its members.
