Jemima Goldsmith has sharply criticised the Pakistani government for allegedly threatening to deny her sons any contact with their father, former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned since August 2023.
The 71-year-old former cricketer and PTI chairman remains incarcerated on multiple charges, including corruption and terrorism, following his removal from office through a no-confidence vote in April 2022.
Jemima, who was married to Imran Khan from 1994 to 2004, expressed outrage over recent remarks by senior government officials warning that Khan’s sons could face arrest if they travel to Pakistan and participate in a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest scheduled later this month or the next.
“My children aren’t allowed to speak on the phone to their father Imran Khan. He has been in solitary confinement in prison for nearly two years,” Jemima posted on X (formerly Twitter). “Pakistan’s government has now said if they go there to try to see him, they too will be arrested and put behind bars. This doesn’t happen in a democracy or a functioning state. This isn’t politics. It’s a personal vendetta.”
Her remarks came after Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah, in an interview with a private news channel, stated, “If Imran Khan’s sons come to Pakistan and join the movement, they will be arrested.”
When asked to elaborate, Sanaullah added, “Why won’t they be arrested? If they come here to lead a violent movement, then what will be the consequence of that?”
In a separate post, Imran Khan’s son Kasim Khan condemned his father’s treatment. “My father, former Prime Minister Imran Khan, has now spent over 700 days in prison — held in solitary confinement,” he wrote.
The ongoing detention of Imran Khan and the apparent restriction on his sons’ access to him have sparked concern among human rights advocates and political observers, who say the developments reflect deepening political polarization in Pakistan.
