Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Sher Afzal Marwat has disclosed key details about the party’s decision-making process regarding the controversial protest that culminated in a march towards D-Chowk in Islamabad.
According to Marwat, the decision not to hold a sit-in at Sangjani was attributed to PTI founder Imran Khan. However, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur opposed the idea of marching towards D-Chowk, highlighting internal disagreements within the party.
Marwat’s revelations came as PTI, which has been facing mounting political and legal challenges for months, struggles with internal rifts after the “do-or-die” protest fiasco.
The protest, initially planned with D-Chowk as the focal point, ended abruptly due to clashes with security forces, sparking widespread criticism within the party.
Imran Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, and Gandapur have come under fire for their roles in the decision to proceed to D-Chowk despite Imran’s apparent preference for a rally at Sangjani.
The situation led to a chaotic confrontation with security forces, causing frustration and discontent among party workers and leadership.
Speaking on program’ Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath, Marwat revealed that Gandapur was against advancing beyond the Kulsoom Hospital area, even opposing movement towards Chungi Number 26.
He expressed his reservations about heading further towards D-Chowk but ultimately faced pushback from other party members. Gandapur reportedly visited Bushra Bibi’s vehicle twice during the protest but refrained from engaging in any visible arguments.
Marwat also shared that PTI had received an offer from the government to hold their protest at Sangjani. Barristers Gohar Ali Khan and Saif conveyed this to Imran Khan during a visit to Adiala Jail.
Despite the offer, Marwat emphasized that the blame on Bushra Bibi for rejecting Sangjani was misplaced, as Imran himself initially preferred D-Chowk.
Adding to the chaos, Marwat noted the lack of proper organization during the protest. He highlighted technical issues, such as power being cut off from the leaders’ container, with no technician available to resolve the problem.
Furthermore, workers were left without clear instructions, exacerbating the confusion and disarray.
These revelations underscore the deepening divides and organizational shortcomings within PTI, further complicating its path forward amid already challenging political and legal circumstances.
