ISLAMABAD: The by-elections for six vacant Senate seats are underway in Pakistan. In the National Assembly hall, polling has commenced for the by-election on one Senate seat from Islamabad.
The contenders for the senate seat in Islamabad include PPP candidate Yousaf Raza Gilani and Chaudhary Ilyas Mehrban from the Sunni Ittehad Council.
Simultaneously, voting is taking place at the Sindh Assembly for the by-election on two General Seats of the Senate from Sindh, which were left vacant due to the resignations of Nisar Ahmed Khuhro and Jam Mehtab Dahar of the Pakistan Peoples Party.
These vacant Senate seats were previously held by Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani, Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar, Prince Ahmed Umer Ahmedzai, and Sarfaraz Ahmed Bugti.
Notably, Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani and Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri have transitioned to the National Assembly following their victories in the recent general elections. Similarly, Nisar Ahmed Khuhro and Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar have been elected to the Sindh Assembly, while Prince Ahmed Umer Ahmedzai and Sarfaraz Ahmed Bugti have assumed membership in the Balochistan Assembly.

The Election Commission of Pakistan has appointed returning officers in Islamabad and the four provinces—Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan—to oversee the Senate elections. According to a notification issued by the Election Commission, members of the National Assembly will cast their votes for one general seat and one seat reserved for technocrats, including Ulema, from the federal capital.
