Bilawal predicts that proposed judicial package will pass through parliament by October 25

As uncertainty lingers over the controversial judicial package, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has expressed confidence that the constitutional amendment will pass through parliament by October 25.

However, during a recent press interaction, he clarified that this deadline applies to the current government, not to his party. “There is no deadline from our side for the constitutional amendment,” he stated, emphasizing PPP’s position.

Bilawal noted that while the government aims to secure the amendment before the 25th, doing so is “neither a necessity nor obligatory.” He acknowledged that the parliamentary process grants the sitting government the authority to amend the constitution for judicial reforms.

The PPP leader also highlighted the importance of building consensus among various political factions, including Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman. Last month, Rehman rejected the government’s proposal to extend judges’ tenures or raise their retirement age, complicating the amendment’s progress.

In August, the coalition government made a failed attempt to introduce a closely-guarded constitutional package amidst speculation about a potential extension for Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa. The government’s efforts stalled when it could not gather enough support, falling short by 13 votes in the National Assembly and nine in the Senate, where a two-thirds majority is required.

Bilawal pointed out that the government could still reach the necessary votes through “conscience voting,” but he reiterated ongoing efforts to achieve a broader consensus.

Additionally, he remarked on the Supreme Court’s recent ruling that allowed defection votes to be counted, which could impact future legislative dynamics.

Addressing other concerns, Bilawal advocated for establishing constitutional courts in the provinces to provide immediate relief to citizens.

He criticized the PTI, stating that despite offering opportunities for dialogue, the party remained disengaged, preferring to engage with the establishment instead of addressing political issues.
