All Senate candidates from Punjab elected unopposed

Five seats go to the leading PTI and opposition PML-N each and one to PML-Q.

After the disqualification or withdrawal of papers by other contestants, there will be no polling for the 11 Senate seats from Punjab as all the candidates for three categories, seven general and two seats each reserved for women and technocrats, stand elected unopposed.

The ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and opposition Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have received five seats each and while one has been grabbed by the PML-Quaid.

A close aide to Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi gave credit to the latter for playing a key role in convincing all the parties — PTI, PML-N, and PPP — for withdrawing candidatures of their respective hopefuls over and above their numerical strength needed to win the Senate seats.

A final decision in this respect was taken at the business advisory committee of the provincial assembly when it met for the previous session, he claimed.

Those elected unopposed on seven general seats of the upper house of parliament are Saifullah Sarwar Khan Nyazee, Aon Abbas, and Ejaz Ahmad Chaudhry of the PTI, Afnan Ullah Khan, Prof Sajid Mir and Irfan-ul-Siddiqui of the PML-N, and Kamil Ali Agha of the PML-Q.

Dr. Zarqa Suharwardy Taimur of the PTI and Saadia Abbasi of the PML-N has been elected unopposed for the two seats reserved for women, and Syed Ali Zafar of the PTI and Azam Nazeer Tarar of the PML-N for the two seats reserved for technocrats/ulema.

There were 17 candidates in the run for seven general seats. Of them, 10 withdrew their candidatures. They were Zahid Hamid, Saiful Malook Khokhar, Baleeghur Rehman, Saud Majeed, Umar Sarfaraz Cheema, Jamshed Iqbal Cheema, Ijaz Hussain Minhas, Muhammad Khan Madni, Zaheer Abbas Khokhar, and Azeem-ul-Haq Minhas. Their withdrawal paved the way for the unopposed election of the seven candidates.

Meanwhile, Punjab Governor Chaudhry Sarwar, Chief Minister Usman Buzdar, PTI parliamentarians, and office-bearers have greeted their party’s and allied party PML-Q’s Senate nominees from Punjab on their unopposed election.
