Police in Karachi have detained several Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers ahead of the party’s planned rally at Bagh-e-Jinnah near Mazar-e-Quaid, officials said on Sunday. The arrests took place at Numaish Chowrangi, where those taken into custody were shifted to a prisoners’ van.
Tensions escalated as some PTI supporters resorted to stone-pelting and attempted to block a police mobile at the site. Authorities warned that strict action would be taken against anyone engaging in violence. The arrests came just hours before the party’s rally, which was cleared by the Sindh government after initial disagreements over the venue and timing.
The rally marks part of PTI’s street mobilisation campaign, led by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, who arrived in Sindh on Friday for a three-day visit. The movement is being held to mark the first anniversary of the controversial February 8, 2024 elections, which PTI describes as “fraudulent.”
Officials confirmed that security arrangements have been tightened across the city to ensure the rally proceeds without major disruptions. The police presence has been increased at key points, including routes leading to Bagh-e-Jinnah, to prevent clashes and maintain public order.
The Sindh government had initially delayed granting permission for the rally, citing logistical concerns, but eventually issued a no-objection certificate (NOC) for the event. PTI leaders said they would comply with the approved venue and warned supporters to avoid street protests.
Despite the NOC, authorities remain vigilant due to fears of further unrest, as political rallies in Karachi have historically seen clashes between supporters and law enforcement. Police and city administration are monitoring the situation closely, coordinating with local officials to manage crowds and traffic.
The PTI leadership has urged calm and assured that the rally will proceed as scheduled, highlighting the party’s determination to mark the anniversary of the disputed elections while maintaining law and order.
