Deadly Clashes Erupt Outside US Consulate on Mai Kolachi Road
At least seven people were killed and 12 injured in violent clashes near the United States Consulate General Karachi on Sunday. The unrest followed reports of the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in US and Israeli air strikes.
Protests erupted across Karachi soon after news of Khamenei’s death spread. Large crowds gathered near the consulate on Mai Kolachi Road. Demonstrators attempted to move toward the diplomatic compound despite heavy security.
According to officials, protesters attacked parts of the consulate’s exterior property. Some areas were damaged. A portion of the premises was reportedly set on fire before security forces intervened.
Police resorted to heavy shelling to disperse the crowd. Tear gas was fired to push back demonstrators. Rescue officials confirmed that at least seven people lost their lives during the clashes. Twelve others sustained injuries and were shifted to nearby hospitals.
Eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes. Some protesters allegedly threw stones at security personnel. There were also unconfirmed reports of gunfire during the confrontation.
Law enforcement agencies, including police and Rangers, deployed additional personnel to control the situation. Authorities later said the area had been partially secured, but tensions remained high.
Protests Spread Across Key Areas of Karachi
Demonstrations were not limited to the consulate area. Protesters gathered at major city points, including Numaish Chowrangi, Abbas Town, and the Tower area. Roads were blocked as marchers chanted slogans condemning the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader.
