In Lahore, police have arrested Shah Reez Azim, the son of Aleema Khan, sister of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, in connection with cases arising from the events of May 9, 2023. The DIG of Investigation confirmed that the accused will be produced before the court today.
Authorities emphasized that anyone found involved in activities deemed anti-state would not be granted leniency, adding that the law applies equally to all citizens without exception. Shah Reez, according to officials, will be formally presented before a judge later this morning.
The arrest comes amid ongoing political turbulence and follows repeated assurances by law enforcement that accountability for the May 9 incidents will continue. These events had sparked a wave of arrests across the country, with several prominent figures facing legal scrutiny.
Aleema Khan, however, had earlier claimed that her son was not lawfully arrested but abducted. According to her account, four armed masked men entered their home in plain clothes through the kitchen entrance. At the time, her son was upstairs with his wife and father. She further alleged that the intruders intimidated household staff, including the drivers, before taking Shah Reez away.
Her claims sparked controversy, with supporters insisting on transparency in the handling of politically sensitive cases. The family maintains that due process must be followed and that unlawful intimidation tactics undermine faith in the justice system.
This development coincides with a major legal breakthrough for the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder, as the Supreme Court yesterday granted Imran Khan bail in eight separate cases. The decision was seen as a relief for PTI’s legal battles, though fresh arrests of his relatives and associates continue to raise tensions.
The arrest of Shah Reez Azim, given his family connection to the former Prime Minister, is expected to draw significant political attention, further intensifying the charged atmosphere surrounding PTI leadership and its supporters.
