The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has made provisional registration compulsory for foreign medical graduates before they can begin their mandatory house job in Pakistan.
According to the council, no foreign-qualified graduate is permitted to undertake a house job without obtaining provisional registration from PMDC, and any ongoing house job without this registration must be discontinued immediately.
In this regard, PMDC has issued an official notification to all public and private medical colleges, teaching hospitals, and healthcare institutions across the country.
The notification directs administrations to ensure strict compliance with the new requirement and to verify the registration status of foreign medical graduates before allowing them to start or continue their house job training.
The council clarified that this directive applies specifically to graduates who have completed their medical education from PMDC-recognised foreign medical universities.
Such graduates must secure provisional registration as a prerequisite for starting their house job, which is a mandatory step toward full registration and independent medical practice in Pakistan.
For graduates of non-recognised foreign medical institutions, PMDC has outlined additional requirements. These graduates will be required to pass the National Registration Examination (NRE) before they can obtain provisional registration. Only after successfully clearing the NRE will they be considered eligible to apply for a house job in Pakistan.
PMDC emphasized that the new rule is aimed at ensuring uniform standards of medical training and safeguarding the quality of healthcare services across the country.
By enforcing provisional registration prior to house job placement, the council seeks to improve oversight of foreign medical graduates and ensure that all trainees meet the necessary academic and professional criteria.
Medical colleges and hospitals have been warned that any violation of the directive may result in administrative action. PMDC has urged institutions to cooperate fully and implement the instructions without delay to avoid complications for both graduates and training facilities.
