ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has reversed its earlier decision to raise the passing marks for MBBS and BDS programs from 50 to 65 percent. The council has officially reinstated the 50 percent passing benchmark for the 2024–25 academic session.
According to a fresh notification, all medical and dental colleges across Pakistan must now follow the revised criteria. The decision aims to ensure uniformity and reduce pressure on students after strong criticism from academic circles and parents.
Attendance Requirement Also Revised
Alongside the grading policy, the PMDC has also withdrawn the 85 percent attendance condition that was imposed earlier. For the current academic year, the attendance threshold has been restored to 75 percent, aligning with long-standing regulations in medical education.
This move has been welcomed by both students and faculty members, who viewed the previous requirements as unnecessarily stringent and disruptive for those balancing academic and clinical responsibilities.
Implementation Across Medical Colleges
The PMDC has instructed all recognized medical and dental institutions to implement these updates immediately. It has also directed college administrations to ensure compliance and inform students about the restored criteria without delay.
Officials said the council’s latest decision is aimed at promoting fairness, improving student performance, and maintaining consistent academic standards nationwide.
