Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called on the international community to push Afghanistan’s authorities to fulfil their commitments against terrorism. He delivered this message while addressing an international forum held in Ashgabat to mark the 30th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality.
Global Call to Rein in Terror Groups
PM Shehbaz stressed that terrorist networks operating from Afghan soil pose a direct threat to regional peace. He urged world leaders to encourage the Afghan administration to meet its international obligations. He said that effective action against such groups is essential for regional stability.
He also thanked Qatar, Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates for mediating efforts that helped establish a ceasefire between Islamabad and Kabul. He noted that although the ceasefire remains in place, it is still fragile.
Pakistan Reaffirms Peaceful Dispute Resolution
The premier highlighted Pakistan’s strong commitment to dialogue and peaceful solutions. He pointed to the UN Security Council’s adoption of Resolution 2788 as an endorsement of Pakistan’s approach.
The resolution called for strengthening global mechanisms to settle international disputes through peaceful means.
PM Shehbaz also urged the global community to support peace efforts in Gaza. He expressed hope that ongoing mediation would protect civilians and allow uninterrupted humanitarian aid. He said Pakistan would continue to support the rights of Palestinians and the people of Kashmir.
Link Between Peace and Development
The premier emphasised that sustainable development and long-term peace are closely linked. He said that the 2030 Agenda provides a shared framework for a stable global future. Pakistan, he noted, is focused on financial inclusion and integrating women and marginalised groups into the national economy.
He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to climate resilience. He said that the country is investing in greener solutions and ecosystem restoration. However, he pointed out that climate disasters and unfair global economic structures continue to hinder progress.
PM Shehbaz said that climate change, poverty, and inequality are interconnected global threats. He called for solutions based on shared responsibility, unity of purpose, and equal access to technology.
Meetings With World Leaders on Sidelines
PM Shehbaz met several world leaders during the forum. In his meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, both sides reaffirmed their deep historical ties. They agreed to enhance cooperation in political, economic, defence, energy, and investment sectors.
The prime minister welcomed Turkish interest in Pakistan’s energy and mineral sectors. He also encouraged collaboration on the privatisation of distribution companies. Both sides agreed to accelerate ministerial-level exchanges.
PM Shehbaz praised Turkiye’s efforts for peace in Gaza. He also thanked Ankara for its constructive role in talks between Pakistan and Afghanistan. He reiterated that peace will only be possible when Pakistan’s security concerns are addressed. He also held informal conversations with leaders from Russia, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan.
Regional Diplomacy by Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also held several bilateral meetings. He met his counterparts from Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Turkiye, Oman, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. These discussions focused on deepening cooperation in trade, connectivity, stability, and economic development.
All sides agreed to expand collaboration and maintain regular high-level engagements.
Strengthening Pakistan-Turkmenistan Ties
PM Shehbaz also met Turkmenistan’s president as part of his engagements. He congratulated the host country on the anniversary of its permanent neutrality. He said Pakistan aims to improve trade and connectivity through both land and sea routes.
