Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a meeting with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. The meeting was described as warm and cordial, focusing on issues of global and regional concern.
The prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s firm commitment to multilateralism. He emphasized that the United Nations must continue to play its central role in addressing pressing global challenges. He also praised the secretary-general’s leadership in strengthening peace, stability, and governance across the world.
During the conversation, Prime Minister Shehbaz expressed gratitude for the appreciation shown towards Pakistan’s rescue and relief efforts during the recent floods. He highlighted that Pakistan, like many climate-vulnerable countries, requires urgent global support. He therefore called for mobilizing additional climate finance to help mitigate the damaging impacts of climate change. According to him, international solidarity is essential for building resilience against recurring climate-related disasters.
The prime minister also discussed issues of critical national importance. He stressed that the Jammu and Kashmir dispute requires a peaceful settlement in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions. The PM also raised concerns about violations of the Indus Waters Treaty and acts of externally sponsored terrorism inside Pakistan. He noted that these challenges demand international attention and fair mediation.
While acknowledging the secretary-general’s sincere efforts to ease tensions in South Asia, the prime minister reiterated that Pakistan values such initiatives. He emphasized that dialogue and diplomacy are essential for lasting peace between Pakistan and India.
Turning to the Middle East, Prime Minister Shehbaz voiced deep concern about the worsening Gaza crisis. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for an immediate ceasefire, unhindered humanitarian aid, and the pursuit of Palestinian statehood. He urged the international community to open a political horizon that leads to irreversible progress toward peace in the region.
The meeting also touched upon Pakistan’s role within the UN Security Council. The prime minister assured that Pakistan will continue to play a constructive role in advancing peace and security at both regional and international levels. He stressed that Pakistan remains committed to promoting harmony, stability, and justice through its principled positions at the UN.
In response, the UN secretary-general lauded Pakistan’s strong voice and consistent engagement on global issues. He acknowledged Pakistan’s contributions to the Security Council and expressed appreciation for its constructive participation in peace-building efforts.
Both leaders agreed that concerted international efforts are required to strengthen the United Nations’ indispensable role in advancing global peace, stability, and sustainable development. They emphasized that global challenges such as climate change, regional disputes, and humanitarian crises must be addressed through cooperation and dialogue.
