KARACHI: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday lauded the Pakistan Navy for its exceptional readiness and vital role in safeguarding the country’s maritime interests during Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos, launched in response to India’s unprovoked aggression.
Addressing naval officers and personnel at the Karachi Naval Dockyard, the prime minister commended the Navy for ensuring the security of sea lines of communication and the uninterrupted flow of maritime trade during a time of heightened tensions.
“Our Navy’s state of readiness was exemplary. The enemy could not even muster the courage to attempt any action at sea,” the premier stated.
Pakistan’s Military Response
The confrontation began after India launched unprovoked missile strikes on Pakistani cities, claiming they targeted alleged “terrorist infrastructure” in response to a deadly attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) that killed 26 tourists. India blamed Pakistan without presenting evidence.
In response, Pakistan initiated Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos, a large-scale retaliatory operation targeting multiple Indian military positions. The Pakistan Air Force reportedly downed six Indian fighter jets, including three Rafale aircraft, and destroyed dozens of drones.
The conflict lasted nearly 87 hours before ending on May 10 with a U.S.-brokered ceasefire.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), 53 people were martyred in Indian strikes during the escalation — including 13 military personnel and 40 civilians.
PM’s Visit to Naval Dockyard
The prime minister visited the Pakistan Navy Dockyard to honour the Navy’s contributions during the conflict. He was received by Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf, with Chief of Army Staff Gen. Syed Asim Munir and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Baber Sidhu also in attendance.
PM Shehbaz boarded the Type-054A Class Destroyer PNS TAIMUR, where he received a briefing from the Commander Pakistan Fleet on the Navy’s strategic role and operational achievements during the operation.
He interacted with officers and sailors, praising their professionalism, combat readiness, and unwavering commitment to national defence.
“Pakistan Navy’s use of modern technology has significantly enhanced its capabilities. Even the enemy now acknowledges that the balance of maritime power in the region has shifted,” the prime minister said.
He further emphasized that the combined efforts of the army, navy, and air force left no room for the adversary to inflict real damage, reinforcing the strength of Pakistan’s joint defence posture.
Shehbaz also recalled the Navy’s proud legacy, referencing historic operations such as Operation Dwarka, and reaffirmed the force’s capability to undertake high-intensity missions whenever required.
Praise for President Trump
During his address, PM Shehbaz also extended heartfelt gratitude to U.S. President Donald Trump for playing a key role in brokering the ceasefire between Pakistan and India.
“President Trump is a man of peace. He and his team made sincere efforts to ensure regional stability and were instrumental in bringing about the ceasefire,” said the prime minister.
He added that President Trump had also expressed willingness to mediate the Kashmir dispute, acknowledging his past offers to help resolve one of the region’s most long-standing conflicts.
“I thank President Trump from the core of my heart. He acted as a true friend of peace,” Shehbaz remarked.
