Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday gave approval for a new rail car project aimed at connecting Rawalpindi and Islamabad, terming it a significant public welfare initiative. After performing the groundbreaking of the T-Chowk Flyover, the premier directed the interior and railway ministers to immediately begin work on the project.
He noted that the track was already available, which would facilitate a speedy launch. Once operational, the service would not only benefit residents of the twin cities and adjoining areas but also help tourists visiting the capital region. Sharif assured full federal government support to ensure timely completion.
Earlier in the day, the prime minister inaugurated the T-Chowk Flyover project located at the intersection of Islamabad Expressway and G.T. Road. The Rs1.4 billion project is scheduled for completion in 150 days and will serve as a milestone development for residents of the region.
Highlighting its importance, officials said around 100,000 vehicles use the junction daily, and the flyover is expected to ease the commute for approximately 25,000 vehicles. The project is being undertaken by a joint venture of Habib Construction Services (HCS) and ZKB.
Shehbaz Sharif praised Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa, and their teams for their efforts and urged strict adherence to quality standards while ensuring timely completion.
Naqvi informed that the expressway widening project had already been completed and that the inauguration was postponed until the last segment—the T-Chowk flyover—was ready.
The prime minister also underscored the importance of preparing Islamabad for hosting the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, noting the planting of 300,000 flowers by Tajik horticulture experts as part of beautification efforts. Several federal ministers, parliamentarians, and senior officials attended the groundbreaking ceremony.
