Footballer Muhammad Riaz
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with national footballer Muhammad Riaz on Wednesday, acknowledging his contributions to Pakistani football and extending much-needed financial support.
During the meeting, the prime minister granted Riaz a financial aid package of Rs2.5 million and announced a job for him, ensuring long-term stability for the struggling athlete.
This initiative was taken after the prime minister took notice of Muhammad Riaz’s financial hardships, which had gained widespread attention on social media.
The talented footballer, who hails from Hangu, had been facing severe financial difficulties after losing his job due to the discontinuation of departmental sports programs under the previous government.
With no other means to sustain himself, Riaz was compelled to sell jalebis to make a living—a heartbreaking situation that highlighted the challenges faced by many athletes in Pakistan.
His story resonated with the public, prompting an outpouring of support and calls for intervention. Upon learning about Riaz’s plight, PM Shehbaz Sharif took swift action and invited him to the Prime Minister’s House.
During their meeting, the prime minister assured him of the government’s commitment to supporting national athletes, recognizing their dedication to representing the country in sports.
The premier emphasized that talented sportsmen like Muhammad Riaz should not have to struggle for basic financial security and pledged to strengthen the sports infrastructure in Pakistan.
He stated that the government would take steps to revive departmental sports programs and create better opportunities for athletes across different disciplines.
Expressing his gratitude, Riaz thanked the prime minister for his generosity and promised to continue working hard to make Pakistan proud.
The move was widely praised, with many calling it a step in the right direction toward valuing and supporting sports talent in the country.
