Photography and Videography Banned in All Clinical Areas
The administration of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad has officially banned all photography and videography within the hospital premises. An official circular issued by hospital authorities prohibits taking pictures or recording videos in any clinical or service area.
The ban is part of efforts to protect patient privacy and maintain professional medical ethics. Authorities emphasized that no recording, photo, or video should be taken without prior written approval from the hospital administration.
โThis directive is applicable to all staff, patients, and visitors,โ a hospital spokesperson said. โIt ensures that medical ethics are upheld and patient confidentiality is respected.โ
Ban Applies to Emergency, OPD, Wards, and Operating Theatres
According to the circular, photography and videography are strictly prohibited in critical areas of the hospital, including emergency departments, outpatient departments (OPD), hospital wards, and operating theatres.
The administration clarified that the rules apply to everyone inside clinical areas, including doctors, nurses, administrative staff, and visiting personnel. Any breach of the rules will be considered a serious violation of hospital regulations.
โStrict compliance is required in all departments,โ the spokesperson added. โThis includes both still images and video recordings, regardless of the purpose or intent.โ
Department Heads Responsible for Enforcement
The circular instructs all department heads to ensure strict implementation of the ban. Hospital authorities have warned that disciplinary action will be taken against any in-charge found failing to enforce the directive.
โThis step is necessary to maintain a professional and ethical environment within the hospital,โ officials noted. โIt also protects patients from unwanted exposure and safeguards sensitive medical procedures from being recorded or shared.โ
The new policy follows rising concerns over unauthorized recordings in hospitals, including viral videos from other medical institutions that raised ethical and privacy issues. PIMS administration emphasized that the ban is a preventive measure to avoid similar incidents within its premises.
Hospital staff have been briefed about the guidelines, and posters will be displayed in key areas to remind visitors and personnel about the rules. Authorities also confirmed that exceptions could only be made with written permission from the relevant administrative department.
By taking this step, PIMS aims to reinforce patient trust and promote a safe environment for medical care. The move has been welcomed by privacy advocates, though it may require careful monitoring to ensure full compliance.
